Maybe you have heard about Flight Control for iPhone? On this device the game is a big hit and is sold many times. It is indeed a great and fun game for iPhone where you master an airport and have to down planes on special zones. The WVGA Game for Windows Mobile feels a lot like this game and appears like a copy of the iPhone version. Though, is it exactly as good as the iPhone game? If you read this review you will find out.
Flight Commander for Windows Mobile phones was developed by the same people that gave us the great game Tower Defense, Tower Defense which was valued as a great game with the fast and addictive game play and great graphics. Flight Commander like Tower Defense looks and feels great. The game features cartoon artwork that genuinely fit the genre. The menu has some voluptuous flight attendants that are wearing tight shirts that appear to be a size too small. Everyone knows sex sells but it does seem a bit overboard for a game like this, even if they are just drawn artwork. These round breasted females in the menu feel out of place and there isn’t really a proper reason for them to be there.
There is an option in the menu to view your high scores that can truly help to motivate yourself to keep improving it. Like Tower Defense from the same developers this game has an choice to continue a paused game which is good. Colorstone really shows it’s understanding towards the mobile gamer here. It’s a great feature that you are able to exit the game at whatever time and carry on later on.
In this Windows Mobile game you have to land choppers and airplanes on landing strips. Water plane airstrips, normal strips and chopper pads are part of the landing district. As the game starts airplanes and helicopters will come in your game world from different angles. As new airplanes or choppers enter the airspace you will see little blinking lights that alert you to their bearing. You land the planes or helicopters in this amazing Windows Mobile game by guiding them to the airstrips. You do this by dragging the helicopters/planes and giving them a route to the landing zone of your desire. Whenever you land a plane your score goes up, the game ends when you crash a plane and your lives run out. By default you can only have one crash before the game ends, but for newcomers you can set this to 4 and make some mistakes before finishing the game. After testing it seems actually preferred to use the stylus instead of controlling the game with your finger. The stylus can actually offer better speed an accuracy and you don’t hear this much but as preciseness goes capacitive screens really can’t beat resistive ones.
Because the game uses OpenGL ES for graphical acceleration the newer mobile phones can make use of this and it shows in the games looks. You get with this, beautiful animations, speed and a great gaming experience. The only downside of the game is the price, which is a little steep.
As Microsoft does not offer proper support for their platform development it’s really their fault. All in all, hats of to Colorstone Ltd. for creating true quality gaming experiences for Windows Mobile. Something will hopefully be a continuing trend in the future of Windows Phone gaming.
